Pushing Me Away (or Dear Curry's PC World)

Before you get too excited, this is not a post about relationships of any kind. No it's far less interesting than that. However, it has left me fuming, or it would do were I not so laid back, I'm just a little bit frustrated.

So my laptop is working, but it's not quite what it was and it really will need to be replaced soon. With this in mind, off I pop to Curry's PC World. Well I say that, I did a fair bit of online research too, but wanted to actually see the laptops, before making a decision and hence, I find myself writing this post, which shall take the form of an open letter...

Dear Curry's PC World,

I popped in to visit you the other day. It was a beautiful day and I would much rather have been visiting your neighbours at Homebase, but sadly the garden had to take a back seat, so I paid yourselves a visit instead.

You were very quiet, I assume everyone else had less pressing technical issues and had indeed visited those very friendly and helpful folk at Homebase. I was pleased it was quiet, it meant I would be able to have a good browse of the laptops and then grab (not literally) a member of staff to pick their brains over various models. I assumed, having eventually located a staff member, that he was going to listen to what I wanted and why, and then point me in the direction of something suitable.

I told your man, that I wanted a Windows 10 laptop and because of the work I do, would quite like an external hard drive to keep confidential files off the laptop and secure. I didn't think this was too unreasonable nor shocking a thing to be looking for. Oh how wrong I was! Let me tell you what your man did...he started to 'explain' laptops to me using a car analogy. Yes I did say a 'car' analogy. Clearly, he saw a female, thought' clueless bird' and figured likening one laptop to a Citroen 2CV and another to a Ford Modeo would nail it for me.

Apparently, what I need is a Chromebook. Now I've nothing against Chromebooks, if I just wanted internet access, I'd happily get one. I've nothing against Google Docs either, but I need more than that. I have Word Documents that I have to complete for my work and I download stock photos for use on my blog (note the word download, not saving the image). Would your man listen to a word I said? No, no he would not. Clearly he's on a commission with the Chromebooks and dived right in there with the hard sell.

Now if your man had any real idea about all things tech, rather than the basic training you've given him for the purpose of selling, he would have heard the word 'blog' and tried to sell me a Macbook, just saying. As it happens, he missed that boat.

Anyway, I don't like hard sells, but being the very polite person I am, made my excuses and left buying nothing. I will of course make a purchase, it just won't be from yourselves. Perhaps you should take a little walk to Homebase, in my experience they are very helpful and polite and do customer service a whole lot better than yourselves. Of course, if you're happy for your sales people to patronise and missell products, carry on as you are, you're doing a fab job!

Regards,

Little Orange Dog

PS Note I am so annoyed I couldn't bring myself to write 'Kind' Regards.

  1. This is why I never ask sales people for advice. Always a waste of time in my experience. And yet my husband has long detailed discussions, and is easily sold on whatever it is they want him to buy.
And I need a new laptop too, my MacBook is nearly 10 years old and take 15 minutes to start up. Not good.

  3. Hi Lisa, and that is exactly what I would have done too. The only thing is the shop or person who has tried hard selling has no idea that you have purchased elsewhere because of them. Which sort of ruins the satisfaction. I always imagine doing that scene from Pretty Woman, where Julia Roberts goes back to the shop that treated her so badly dressed up to the nines after having spent her money elsewhere. I never have though. I hope you find the PC to suit your needs very soon.

Thank you fr linking up with the #MMBC.

  4. I've had these kinds of problems in there too. It's so annoying. When I bought my laptop, they were trying to give hubby and I advice and attempting to scaremonger us about things. Hubby and I work in IT, but I can see a lot of people parting with cash as they really do give their extras the hard sell. #ThatFridayLinky

    1. I used to work for Bose and Curry's were horrendous for misselling our products to customers. They're fine with kitchen appliances etc, but horrendous with tech :-( x

    1. Thanks Nige, always lovely to link up with you. The whole Curry's thing wouldn't be so bad if they genuinely knew what they were talking about, but it's so obvious they're scripted x

  6. Oh dear. Sounds like the salesman could have done with listening to you a better and focused on what you wanted, not his own commission. Thanks for linking up to #ThatFridayLinky
