A Special Friend

I was talking to D yesterday, or rather 'Whatsapping' him, as you do, and the conversation we were having reminded me of a certain friend that a much younger Miss. L had. This friend was very important to her and was almost always around; rarely was there a time when we were without said friend. However, as the years passed, that little friend gradually spent less time with us and eventually didn't visit anymore.

Looking back it's almost a little sad to think we'll never see him again. Well I say 'see', we actually never did see him; in fact, I couldn't tell you what he looked like at all because this particular friend was Miss. L's imaginary friend. Unlike, Miss. D, whom briefly had an imaginary friend, Miss. L's little friend spent a lot of time with us and went everywhere with us for quite a few years.

He went by the name of Gluey Monster and he was very small, small enough to fit in Miss. L's pocket. He would go to nursery with her, to the shops, on holiday, everywhere, almost always travelling in her pocket, although on occasion he would escape and cause havoc.

You see, Miss. L was such a very good child. She never did anything wrong, EVER! That said, Gluey Monster was a nightmare, if something was broken, or scribbled on, or messed up, you can bet it was Gluey Monster, every time. He never owned up to it though, Miss. L would grass him up whilst he was busy hiding somewhere (probably in her pocket), so I'd have to have a little chat with a certain young lady about how he should behave.

Yes, this little person was charged with explaining to Gluey Monster why he should be a good boy. I'm not sure she did a very good job of  passing the message on though because he still got up to all sorts of mischief. Obviously it was Gluey Monster, I mean butter wouldn't dare to melt in that mouth, would it?

Now Miss. L is eleven and Gluey Monster has moved on. Apparently he moved to Spain a few years ago and is now spending his time lying in the sun, enjoying siestas and indulging in tapas, as one must, when in Spain.

I'll be honest, I miss him a little and all the trouble he used to get in to, but I am also, just a little bit upset with him because, do you know what? That naughty little monster hasn't even had the good manners to bother sending a postcard!

Oh and just in case you were wondering why a conversation with D triggered memories of Gluey Monster, it's because I have yet to meet his best mate and am beginning to think that he too is an imaginary friend, though I am assured he is not and is in fact real, could be a tad awkward otherwise.

  5. I had an imaginary dog called Red as a child and he came everywhere with me! I just love how vivid children's imaginations are...something which sadly is lost a little in adulthood. Thanks for sharing #thatfridaylinky

    1. Yes, I know what you mean, my eldest only had one briefly before she forgot about it and she too is a creative thing. I'm still surprised Gluey Monster stuck around for years!
